Introduction

APPC is actually the front end deliverer of products developed by NVTech.  APPC has, in the past, acted as the test ground for experimentation of various ideas, formulated in NVTech, concerning the provision of highly cost-effective IT support to businesses. If you go to Past Projects and Current Projects you will see the large number of past and present projects that Kevin Loughrey and his team have been involved with over the years.

All of the past projects concerned work performed whilst serving in the Australian and British Military.

Recent projects (and one has to temper the word "recent" because the Strata Plan Management Project, called SPInfo, has been running for over 10 years now!) largely involve the use of databases shared by many people and accessed through a Graphical User Frontend programmed in Microsoft Access, Java or Python.  The last two languages are particularly attractive because they allow these front ends to run on Windows, Linux and Apple Operating Systems.  Platform independence and breaking away from the virtual monopoly that Microsoft has enforced for so many years is beginning have some appeal to discerning businessmen.

Many years ago, the backend database used to be Microsoft Access but around 2003, with the invaluable help of a friend and colleague, Michael van der Kolff, I made the switch to Firebird SQL as the favoured database for all future small to medium business applications.  In the process of doing this I wrote software in MS Access Visual Basic to transfer the MS Access database in its entirety across into Firebird SQL.  This software creates the tables, the fields, sets up the referential integrity and then moves all of the data across into the newly created database structure.  If you would like to know more about this, please contact me.

Firebird SQL

Firebird is a relational database offering many ANSI SQL standard features that runs on Linux, Windows, and a variety of Unix platforms. Firebird offers excellent concurrency, high performance, and powerful language support for stored procedures and triggers. It has been used in production systems, under a variety of names, since 1981.

Firebird SQL will supposedly service up to 50,000 users but I would not recommend that.  If you are going to support more than a few hundred people, it is better to use PostgreSQL; a database that competes well with Oracle both in terms of its speed and its features.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source object-relational database system. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64), and Windows. It is fully ACID compliant, has full support for foreign keys, joins, views, triggers, and stored procedures (in multiple languages). It includes most SQL:2008 data types, including INTEGER, NUMERIC, BOOLEAN, CHAR, VARCHAR, DATE, INTERVAL, and TIMESTAMP. It also supports storage of binary large objects, including pictures, sounds, or video. It has native programming interfaces for C/C++, Java, .Net, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, ODBC, among others, and exceptional documentation. (For more information go to http://www.postgresql.org/ )
